When are tryouts scheduled, and who is eligible to participate?

Tryouts typically occur at the end of May and the beginning of June each year for the upcoming season, spanning two (2) days.

Eligibility criteria and guidelines for tryouts include:

  • Officially accepted incoming student, waitlisted, or transfer for the upcoming academic year.
  • Current students maintaining a cumulative GPA of 2.0 throughout the entire season and in good academic and account standing with the University.
  • Individuals currently on academic probation or who have previously resigned from the team are ineligible.
  • Returning athletes do not have guaranteed positions for the upcoming season, necessitating the maintenance of skills throughout the year. Returning members are required to try out annually.

What can participants anticipate during tryouts?

Evaluation will encompass the following (subject to change):

  • Partner stunts
  • Pyramid basic skills
  • Jumps
  • Tumbling
  • University material such as the fight song and other traditions taught at tryouts

For those with conflicts such as academic obligations or long-distance travel, video submissions may be necessary. Prior arrangements must be made with the coach. Team members will be primarily selected from live tryouts, with additional spots potentially filled from video applicants.

How many members constitute the team?

The team typically comprises 24 to 36 members.

Does the team compete?

Yes, the team competes in College STUNT.

Are scholarships offered?

What is the time commitment?

Members cheer for:

  • All home football and designated away football games
  • Men's and Women's home basketball and post-season games
  • Selected sports events such as volleyball and soccer
  • Campus and community events
  • Youth clinics throughout the season

The season typically spans from August to May, with practices held 2-3 times a week for three to four hours per session during the academic year. Additional practices may be scheduled as required, with games occurring once to twice a week alongside any related events.

What are practices like during Summer, Holiday, Winter, and Spring breaks?

Practice schedules vary annually due to facility availability, STUNT schedules, and the schedules of football, basketball, and other sports.

  • Summer: Practices generally commence in early August, with a brief break before resuming at the end of August or beginning of September.
  • Thanksgiving: Attendance at basketball games is typically required over the holiday weekend.
  • Winter Break: Practices and games typically extend one to two weeks past finals week, with double practices scheduled daily during this period. Team members usually receive approximately 7-14 days off for the winter holidays.
  • Spring Break: Practices may occur if STUNT games are scheduled for that year.

Is housing provided during non-academic periods?

New team members are provided housing from current or returning team members residing locally during holiday breaks.

What are the costs associated with team participation?

Team fees range between $1000-1500, covering expenses such as travel, warm-ups, practice gear, shoes, game/official fees, and team functions/equipment. However, uniform costs are separate from the team fee. Fundraising opportunities may be available.
